William Rooney


William Rooney, age 88, of Fair Lawn, NJ on Friday, December 28, 2018.  Born in County Wicklow and raised in Ardoyne, County Carlow, Ireland, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1957 residing in the Bronx, NY before moving to Fair Lawn in 1972.  He served with the British Merchant Marines from 1948-1957.  A faithful parishioner of St. Anne R.C. Church in Fair Lawn, he was a member of the Holy Name Society.  Bill was also a member of the Bergen Irish Association in Dumont and Knights of Columbus St. Ann Council Post 2853 of Fair Lawn.

Prior to retiring in 1996, he was employed with the Borough of Fair Lawn Board of Education.  Previously, he was a driver with the Mass Transit Authority of New York City from 1957-1981.

Beloved husband of Mary (Crowley) Rooney.  Loving and devoted father of Kevin Rooney and wife Mary, Kathleen Rooney, Eileen Barone and husband Nick and Maureen Hirsch and husband Alex.  Cherished grandfather of Erin, Brendan, Sophia, Ryan, Megan, Liam, Luke and Olivia.  Dear brother of Luke Rooney, Judy Hall, Gerard Rooney, Alice Burns, Teresa Keogh, Kathleen Kehoe, Trish Ryan and the late Peter Rooney and Elizabeth Nolan.

The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday, January 2, 2019, 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ.  A Funeral Mass is planned for Thursday, January 3, 2019, 10:30 am at St. Anne R.C. Church, 15-05 St. Anne Street, Fair Lawn, NJ.  Entombment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of William to the American Heart Association, Founders Affiliate, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA  02241-7005 would be appreciated.

I remember Mr. Rooney from many years back when I grew up in Fair Lawn. He was a very nice man. My deepest sympathies to the Rooney Family
