Barbara Ann Bresnowitz

Barbara Ann (nee Hawlik) Bresnowitz, aged 77, a talented gardener, avid bird-watcher, and devoted matriarch, died in her Garfield, NJ, home on September 19th, 2018.  She loved tending to her garden and was proud of the yard she kept perpetually in bloom, having an uncanny gift for creating life where there was none. She equally loved fattening up the local wildlife, including scores of birds, squirrels, and once, an incredibly large snapping turtle. In recent years, she saw to it that the many swallowtails and monarchs nesting in her garden transitioned safely from caterpillars to butterflies.

Barbara was an accomplished baker and home cook who expressed her love through food. Accordingly, she made too many Christmas cookies every year, of which no one complained. As someone who cared deeply about politics and world events, she was a habitual news watcher and daily reader of the Herald News.

While Barbara had a difficult life, she remained graceful, compassionate, and full of humor, never ceasing to see her family through their own troubles. She was fiercely independent and worked as a repair tech with Sears for 21 years, having begun at a time when women were still largely consigned to secretarial work.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Vincent Bresnowitz. She was the loving mother of four children: Diane (William) Paventa, Debbie Bresnowitz, Donna Bresnowitz, and Dori Bresnowitz; and three grandchildren: Amanda (Timothy) O'Donnell, Kyle Viehmeyer, and Ryan Maurer; all of whom, along with the birds and squirrels, will miss her greatly.

Visitation Sunday, Sept. 23rd 2-4 pm with service following at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148 would be greatly appreciated.
